Balack’s Cove
This foreboding sea cave has fierce, unpredictable tides that can easily wash unsuspecting Hunters out to sea. Those who seek the spirits of this darkened grotto should arm a Shadow, Arcane or Forgotten trap, and use Vanilla Stilton as bait.
Overview
Balack’s Cove is the second location that was introduced to the game with a limit on how long you can hunt there.
The “tide” of this location moves between low, mid and high tide. Riptide mice can be found in mid tide and are prevalent in high tide. Catching one washes a hunter out of the Cove and into the Jungle of Dread.
Despite that, Balack’s Cove is a very tempting place to hunt, the points available in this location are greater than any other location introduced before it.
Three of the most powerful mice in this location drop loot that can be used to craft a potent type of cheese that attracts more of the powerful mice in the location as well as the most powerful mouse, Balack the Banished.
There are three choices of power type that can be used to hunt in the Balack’s Cove, each of the three suits a different style of play or goal.
Requirements
To hunt in the Balack’s Cove a Hunter must have:
A Hunter’s Title of at least
.
Have crafted the Balack’s Lantern.
And it is recommended that a Hunter should have:
An Arcane, Forgotten or Shadow Weapon.
Vanilla Stilton or Vengeful Vanilla Stilton cheese.
Hunting Tips by Larry
I’m jolly glad to be out of Dracano, fearless MouseHunter, but this place isn’t much better… I can hear whispering all around, and I don’t think it’s the sound of the waves.
This is the cursed resting place of Balack the Banished, and his legion of lich slaves. Shadow and Arcane traps work here, but Forgotten traps garner the best results, especially in conflict with Balack. The evil lord’s followers respond only to the smell of rare vanilla bean, so keep plenty of Vanilla Stilton on hand. If you’re after Balack and his Elder Liches, however, you’ll need something with a little more bite– Vengeful Vanilla Stilton, a nasty cheese made from the rage of Balack’s eternal slaves.
If a legion of undead mice isn’t enough to spook you, there’s also the tides. The mysterious Riptide Mouse pulls the tides in and out several times a day, so unlucky Hunters caught in the waves will get washed out onto the shores of the Jungle of Dread!
This will be a difficult fight, even for an experienced MouseHunter, but I believe in you! Get in there and lift that curse!
New Mice
There are 10 new mice in the Balack’s Cover that a hunter won’t have encountered before, none of these mice can be found in other locations.

Mice Populations
We currently do not have enough results for Mice Populations.
To begin with you will want to use Vanilla Stilton in Balack’s Cove, once you have caught enough Lich mice to craft some vengeful Vanilla Stilton, then you can use that to hunt for Balack.

Goals
Here is a selection of Goals that a hunter may like to achieve:
Catching Liches
The three lich mice drop loot which is required to make Vengeful Vanilla Stilton cheese.
The liches can be attracted using Vanilla Stilton (occassionally), or with Vengeful Vanilla Stilton (more commonly).
Hunters wishing to catch these three mice will find the task easiest when using the Ancient Box Trap, although the A.C.R.o.N.Y.M. will work well.
Unfortunately, due to the random nature of the game, many players will soon find themselves with unbalanced numbers of the three mice.
There is not much that can be done about this, except to keep hunting.
Catch Balack
To catch Balack the Banished, a hunter should arm Vengeful Vanilla Stilton and the Ancient Box Trap.
Having a good supply of Vengeful Vanilla Stilton will help in this goal as you are likely to miss most of the Balack the Banished mice you encounter.
Which trap to use
There are three different types of trap that work in Balack’s Cove, and they suit three different styles of play:
Passive Hunters – Shadow Traps
If you are the type of hunter who does not get to spend long playing the game, or is about to go offline for a while, a Shadow Weapon might be a good choice for you.
Shadow traps are very good against the weakest and most common of the mice in Balack’s Cove.
Shadow traps are quite weak against the strongest mice in Balack’s Cove.
When the tide moves hunters to the Jungle of Dread, a Shadow trap will continue to catch mice, an ideal choice if you don’t know if you will be able to access the game again before the tide.
Points Hunters – Arcane Traps
If you are the type of hunter who is interested in obtaining the most points or wishes to increase their title quickly, an Arcane Weapon will be a good choice for you.
Arcane traps are reasonable against all the miCe in Balack’s Cove, allowing for the greatest points gains and title increase.
Arcane traps are useless against Pygmy Swarm mice in the Jungle of Dread, so hunters using Arcane traps should be able to check the game regularly to avoid wasted hunts.
Loot Hunters – Forgotten Traps
If you are the type of hunter who is interested in collecting the loot to make Vengeful Vanilla Stilton as quickly as possible, a Forgotten Weapon will be a good choice for you.
Forgotten traps are the best against the three Lich mice in Balack’s Cove, granting the best opportunity to gain the loot you desire.
Forgotten traps are weaker against the weakest mice in Balack’s Cove, meaning that you will miss the most common mice more often.
Forgotten traps are useless against Pygmy Swarm mice in the Jungle of Dread, so hunters using Forgotten traps should be able to check the game regularly to avoid wasted hunts.
Pick which of the three styles seems most appropriate for you, and arm a weapon of that type.

Thank you to all who have contributed so far and will do so in the future.
This article contains information relevant to MouseHunt v3.

I notice you give Forgotten type traps (ABT) 4 stars for overall performance but shadow traps 5 stars. I think this is misleading since the ABT performs better on the gold/hunt metric than the clock with VS. ABT actually outperforms even ACRoNYM in gold when using VVS. Since most people will be using VS far more than VVS, I would gear your remarks to that, or better separate your rating into VS and VVS:
With VS: I would give ACRO 5 stars, and both ABT and Clock 4 stars
With VVS: I would give ABT 5 stars, ACRo 4 stars, and Clock 3 stars.
The star rating probably needs a bit more definition. While I’m updating everything I’ll get some feedback.
Is the catch rate out of total hunts or is it out of total attractions?
Sorry, the catch rate is per hunt.
hello there, I just finished crafting 150 of vanilla stilon and ready to hunt int Balack’s Cove, and I jus want to reconfirm that the liches (which are Forgotten mouse) is weak against ABT (Forgotten has normal effectiveness towards Forgotten mice) and not Acronym (Arcane effective towards Forgotten mice)? or in this case those rules does not apply? Can you confirm this for me please?
From what we could tell in MH2, there were two “tiers” of mice in the Cove.
The Lich mice were in the second tier, where the ABT was more effective than the Acronym and offered a slightly better chance of catching them.
The 5 weakest mice were in the first tier where Acronym was better than the ABT.
Of course, this may have changed in MH3.
Got it thanks!
I’m hunting in Balack’s Cove atm (MH 3) and it seems like there still are two tiers of mice and that the Lich mice are still more vulnerable to ABT. (if you use ABT all three are ‘difficult’, if you use ACRONYM they are split between ‘difficult’ and ‘overpowering’).
It does seem that the liches are not of equal power though, since the Derr Lich mouse is the only one of the three becoming ‘overpowering’ when switching from ABT to ACRONYM
Thanks Paul, I like the new articles and the quasi-walkthrough format. I appreciate all of your hard work on this site.
Can you include the Power Type with the name of the Trap on the Setup Options? I don’t always remember what is what in general, and these Power Types are quite confusing. Currently, I need to flip back and forth between this and the Wiki to understand this.
Otherwise, good job.
This place is crazy! I’ve spent more than 200 vanilla stiltons and i only got enough to make about 9 vengeful vanilla stiltons (using magic essence). This place is gonna take a long time to get through.
I have to agree with you Madro!
This place is hands-down the toughest location in the game. The time and patience it takes to gather the vanilla beans and then try to get enough loot from the three lich mice to craft just a few pieces of vengeful is maddening. Top that with the weak effectiveness of the vengeful to even sustain creating more vengeful is just frustrating.
I cannot even imagine anyone attempting to get through this area without donating some $$$ to the devs to get the lucky shield and enough SB+ to make the recipes actually produce a few more pieces of the precious cheese. Obviously this is a case of DHU.
It does seem difficult but it’s child’s play when compared to Zugzwang’s Tower IMO.
I only just got here but at least the end appears achievable.
Please include the difference in the use of bases with the ABT… I’m before the Balack but i have missed three times using the Tiki, may be Magma is better for this hunt? Greetings from Mexico!
You might want to correct the info here for the newly established consensus that ACRONYM has now been made more effective than ABT against the Liches, so it should be used with Vanilla Stilton under all circumstances, regardless of what type of hunter you are and which base you use.
With Vengeful VS, ABT makes most sense since it is far more effective vs. Balack than ACRONYM.
Do you mean that it’s showing higher catch rates or are you implying a change in the effectiveness modifier?
im having a hard time catching and attracting the derr lich mouse.
i tried lots of setup but it all failed.
The best set-up to catch any of the 3 Derr mice is: Ancient Box Trap, Tiki Base, and Power Charms (bought from the Mountain Charm Shoppe). With this set-up, all three Derr mice are listed as “Difficult”. Without the Power Charms, the Elub Derr falls into “Overpowering” while the other 2 remain “Difficult”.
Can we get an update with the new arcane NNT (GWH 2011 trap) which offers double loot against liches?
