Helping you to hunt more effectively

Gouda Research

We are currently looking into the effects of using Gouda in locations outside of the Tribal Isles in the hopes of discovering its “other use”.

How you can help: We’re asking volunteers to conduct a number of hunts with Gouda in a location outside the Tribal Isles, then submit the logs to the survey.

We’re not asking for a specific number of hunts, so that those who have received Gouda as King’s Rewards can join in too, while 2 or 3 hunts might not seem like a lot, but combined with the efforts of other hunters it will prove very useful.

Results so far (last updated 05-Jan-10):

Location Hunts Received Adjusted Attraction Rate Notes
Acolyte Realm 24 0.00%
Bazaar 87 85.77%
Calm Clearing 9 88.05%
Catacombs 85 3.51% Physical Mice only
Dojo 186 81.34% Expected number of Students
(About 25%)
Forbidden Grove 0
Great Gnarled Tree 45 78.36%
Harbour 10 66.67%
Laboratory 291 79.36%
Lagoon 17 38.08%
Meadow 20 94.32%
Meditation Room 5 0.00%
Mountain 801 85.40%
Mousoleum 10 38.78% Physical Mice only
Pinnacle Chamber 0
S.S. Huntington II 1899 74.90% Attracts more Mermaids 100% Confidence
Attracts more Shelders 97.68% Confidence
Town of Digby 10 69.39%
Town of Gnawnia 33 87.37%
Training Grounds 10 89.36%

The only conclusive results we have so far is that Gouda is better for attracting both Mermaids and Shelders in the S.S.Huntington II than Brie.
Other cheese, such as SUPER|brie+, have a similar attraction rate to Brie for these mice.
However, it should be pointed out that whilst better, the attraction rates for the Shelder with Gouda are still not great.

Brie is currently showing an average Shelder Attraction of once every 497 attractions (694 hunts with base attraction).
Gouda is currently showing an average Shelder Attraction of once every 119 attractions (158 hunts with base attraction).

A big thankyou to everyone who has helped so far by contributing their results.

  2. Hi, just want to comment.

We know that gouda will attract Hydro, Tactial and Physical mice, because it will attract those three on the Islands.

It would be good to note in the above summary logs whether or not those in the Cats and Moz that were attracted were Shadow mice or Forgotten mice.

That will help us narrow down the secret use I think. If it’s possible to note this that would help perhaps. Thanks!

Thanks Dave, are you able to tell me what setup you were using?

  7. Well i was directed here after i posted a query on whether that the use of guoda increase the rate of loot drop in area such as lab and the GGT…

    What do your think

Iz, when I do the next update I’ll add in something about drop rates, but please remember we’ve only got limited information so far.

  9. Hey! I just sent you an eMail with 17 more hunts in the Dojo… Just wanted to know if it arrived and is readable…

I never did this, and honestly: The table looks somehow strange and not well-formatted when copied into the eMail…

However: This is of course far from being statistically relevant, but the Student rate was not as impressive as before! (25% is still good though, right?)

  15. I’m doing a huge research right now in ToD with over 100 hunts… I don’t think is a good idea to post my whole log here. Any suggestions?

  24. Anybody test Gouda in the Lagoon? If it’s affective in the Tribal Islands with Hydro mice, wouldn’t that mean it should improve the attraction rate for the Hydra?

I have 14 pieces which I’ve accumulated via King’s Rewards. I’ll give them a try. If this theory is true, it might explain why the Dev’s are giving Gouda out as King’s Rewards to players who are still landlocked (Prior to building the ship).

  25. how bout lagoon?

  26. LAGOON – DDB/Explosive (started w/ 14 pieces of Gouda)

So… only had 14 pieces but went through 23 hunts. One went stale but then I switch to dehydration base. Seemed to have less attraction than the Gnarled… which begs the question of whether gnarled would work better than Gouda over in the Tribal Islands?????

Also, unfortunately, no Hydra sightings. So, very little to no affect at attracting the Hydra in the Lagoon. At least by my experience.

  32. hmm just wanted to comment, since gouda seems to attract a lot of physical mice, hunters might be able to use it as rare mice hunting cheese :D i mean, black widow, mobster, glitchpaw, they’r all physical, so why not use gouda in places with only shadow/forgotten mice, so u get more rare physical at your trap

  33. It’s not so much attracting additional physical mice, as failing to attract anything that’s not physical.

As such, it doesn’t offer a better chance of attracting those mice than Brie does.

  35. How do you know the “other use” of Gouda is to attract certain mice in certain locations? It could just as well be to be smashed in the next update in order to make something. If it was mentioned that the other use was outside the isles (by an official source), please mention it to me. But I think it could be used in the isles, perhaps later on.

I sounded the Hunter’s Horn, but my Gouda cheese failed to attract a mouse.

Conclusion in Lagoon:- Gouda is really useless in attracting Hydra.

  37. Anything news on the research on using Gouda on the mainland?

I personally believe that Gouda on the mainland attracts rare mice a little better.. only by a little though.

That is, Mole, Shelder, Mermaid and possibly Abominable Snow Mouse.

I’m thinking about hunting with Gouda in the mountains after ronza leaves and I finish my Rockforth.. and of course I’ll submit the info from the mountains

  41. Is it a possibility that people only supply their log when they catch a Shelder or a mermaid on the ship using Gouda?
This perception that it does could cause some bias on results as people might catch a shelder and think “It’s because I was using Gouda” and therefore post a log.

And correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t the devs say (in a FBF if I recall) that it was designed to help one get to the Ship or the isles and was designed to be used with the minimal amounts recieved by KR.

Just my two sense. You guys do a great job.
    Cheers,
    James

  42. What does “expected number of students mean”. I mean, what is the “expected number”?

  43. an avid mousehunter says:

I think that using Gouda outside of the isles attracts rare mice a little better, eg zombie, mole, asm and the pirate… but due to the large amount difference (600 gold to 200 gold) its not profitable.

  47. Feedback Friday, October 23, 2009
    http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2407712

Dave (12:49): “Mainland use of Gouda… It’s not something really that useful, but I will say I noticed somebody found it already on the boards, but nobody really picked up on it, so… somebody’s found it. (…) So it’s been discovered, but I just don’t think anyone officially clued in.”

It would be nice if Gouda helped get to the ship faster, but it appears to not help with Hydra, and increased attraction of Splintered Wood and/or Scrap Metal carriers are about the only things left that would qualify as “not something really that useful” for the purpose (and would be better described as “not really useful at all”). I’d say it’s safe to rule out a special drop of Bubbleh.

The Mermaid/Shelder attraction boost appears to be the special use… except for the fact that the ship isn’t exactly on the mainland. Perhaps someone should bring it up explicitly in an FBF one last time so we can put this one to rest.
