Helping you to hunt more effectively

Nerg Plains

The Nerg Tribe use the tall grass for camouflage and the sturdy trees as defensive positions making their village hard to infiltrate. Use of a Tactical trap is highly recommended when hunting for the Nerg.

The Nerg Plains are the Tactical area of the Tribal Isles, it offers a good mix of points and gold, and is generally considered the easiest of the three locations to hunt in.

In this article we present you with some of the results from our survey, as well as some theories and strategies to help you hunt in this location.

Cheese & Mice

Here is a breakdown of the base attraction rates and mouse populations seen with various cheese.

  Gouda Gumbo Super Brie
Alnilam 17.51%   16.80%
Beast Tamer 17.48%   17.79%
Black Widow 0.14% 0.11% 0.22%
Caretaker 8.68%   8.30%
Conjurer 16.89%   17.12%
Conqueror 4.24%   4.40%
Defender   60.99%
Finder 17.69%   18.21%
Narrator 8.79%   8.83%
Nerg Chieftain   7.86%
Pathfinder 8.57%   8.32%
Slayer   31.03%

Hunts Submitted 58,434 22,144 5,927
Base Attraction Rate 79.47% 98.93% 98.92%

Gumbo is the only cheese to use when going after the “Big Three” in Nerg, but we can see from the populations of the other mice that there doesn’t seem to be a preference for any of the other cheese, as such, your only choice for cheese will be balancing cost with attraction rates.

Gouda has a base attraction rate of about 80% in the Nerg Plains, reasonable gold rewards make it quite profitable in the long run.

Super Brie boasts an impressive 99% attraction rate, allowing hunters to focus on the much needed power and luck of their trap without suffering any significant drawbacks.

General Strategies

All of the mice in the Nerg Plains are Tactical mice, most Tactical traps will give good results, but high luck traps generally appear to have a better performance.

Physical and Hydro Weapons types are completely ineffective against most of the mice, and are only of normal effectiveness against the Black Widow, Narrator, Pathfinder and Caretaker mice, so are not recommended.

Tactical Weapon types are very effective against all of the mice, and are highly recommended.

Arcane and Shadow Weapon types are completely ineffective against most of the mice, and are only of normal effectiveness against the Black Widow, so are not recommended.

Draconic and Forgotten Weapon types are completely ineffective against all of the mice.

Normal Setup Options

We do not currently have enough hunts received to include these setups, please continue to submit to the survey so we can add them at a later date.

Limited Edition Setup Options

All cheese costs have been removed from these figures, and only show earnings after the cheese has been purchased for ease of comparison.

Goals

Collect Savoury Vegetables

Savoury Vegetables are required to make Gumbo Cheese, which is used to attract the Grandfather Mouse in Cape Clawed, and three mice in Nerg Plains, the Nerg Chieftain Mouse, Slayer Mouse and Defender Mouse.

Savoury Vegetables are dropped as loot by the Alnilam Mouse, Beast Tamer Mouse (upto 2), Caretaker Mouse, Conjurer Mouse, Conqueror Mouse, Finder Mouse (upto 3), Narrator Mouse and Pathfinder Mouse, each mouse only drops up to 1 Savoury Vegetable with the two exceptions mentioned above.

The weaker the mouse is, the less likely they are to drop Savoury Vegetables, with the Conqueror Mouse dropping 1 Savoury Vegetables in almost all cases.

Collect Yellow Pepper Seeds

Yellow Pepper Seeds are required to make a number of the Havarti Cheese used in the Jungle of Dread and Dracano, they are only dropped by the three mice in Nerg Plains that can only be attracted with Gumbo Cheese.

Yellow Pepper Seeds are dropped as loot by the Nerg Chieftain Mouse (upto 3), Slayer Mouse (upto 2) and Defender Mouse (upto 1).

As with Savoury Vegetables, the weakest mouse (the Defender) is the least likely to drop Yellow Pepper Seeds, while the Nerg Chieftain almost always drops at least 1 Yellow Pepper Seed.

High power and high luck Tactical traps are highly recommended when hunting these three mice.

Catch a Nerg Chieftain Mouse with the Blueprints

The Nerg Chieftain Mouse drops the Ancient Ripped Blueprint Piece, which is used for crafting the Ancient Box Trap.

The Nerg Chieftain Mouse is only attracted to Gumbo Cheese, is not commonly encountered and is the most powerful mouse in the location, fortunately it will drop the Blueprints in most cases (unless you already have them in your inventory), so it is an unlucky hunter who has to catch more than two before receiving this loot.

High power and high luck Tactical traps are highly recommended.

Earning Gold (Comparison with Derr Dunes)

We all know that Derr Dunes is a good place to earn gold, but Nerg not only offers good gold returns, but much better points as well, so lets take a quick look at the above results and see how it compares (special thanks to Matthew Limber for convincing me to look into this).

At the time of writing (these figures are based on those at 05-Feb-10), the cost of Super Brie is about 1,700 gold per piece, Gouda is priced at 600 gold per piece and Brie at 200 gold per piece. Numbers above in the Setup Options section have been given without these prices included, to establish gold returns from using certain cheese, these have been factored in.

For this, we’re going to look at good setups for each location, in the case of Derr Dunes, this is the Chrome DrillBot, for the Nerg Plains, this is the 2010 Blastoff Trap, both setups will be using the Magma Base, a Golden Shield and Gouda cheese.

The Chrome DrillBot is currently earning about 1,850 gold per hunt before cheese cost and about 1,100 gold per hunt after removing the cost of the Gouda.
The 2010 Blastoff Trap is currently earning about 1,775 gold per hunt before cheese cost and about 1,150 gold per hunt after removing the cost of the Gouda.

So that actually means that while you’re getting a better gold income from Derr, you’re actually making more profit from your Gouda in Nerg, so how does that happen?

It’s because the mice in Derr are stealing more additional pieces of the cheese than their counterparts in Nerg, which is increasing the number of Gouda you need to do the same number of hunts in Derr.

Because of this, the same doesn’t hold true for Super Brie, it’s still more efficient to use that in Derr because mice can’t steal additional pieces of Super Brie.

It’s worth remembering though, that as we get more results in these figures will change slightly, and at a difference of only about 50 gold per hunt currently you may find that the two locations may switch as to which offers the best profit in the future, but it’s well worth pointing out that while the gold profit is very similar, the points available in Nerg are much better.

Earning Gold in the Gumbo Cycle (Comparison with Derr Dunes)

The Gumbo Cycle is hunting for Savoury Vegetables, then using those vegetables to craft Gumbo Cheese and hunting with that cheese as Gumbo offers higher points and gold returns than any other cheese in the Nerg Plains, and as such, is the best way to earn gold.

For this we’re going to look at the same setups as we used above in the earning gold comparison.

Gumbo (20 pieces), the results above show that in 20 hunts we can expect to earn about 31,000 gold after taking off the cost of crafting Gumbo (with Super Brie prices at 1,700), we can also expect to collect about 14 Yellow Seeds

Gumbo (15 pieces), the results above show that in 15 hunts we can expect to earn about 27,000 gold after taking off the cost of crafting Gumbo, we can also expect to collect about 10.5 Yellow Seeds

Gouda, the results above show that it will take about 53 hunts to collect 30 Savoury Vegetables, and we can expect to earn about 62,000 gold after taking off the cost of Gouda at 600 gold per piece.

If we add in the Gumbo (20 pieces), we get a total profit of about 93,000 gold over 73 hunts, about 1,275 gold per hunt and 0.19 Yellow Seeds per hunt.

If we add in the Gumbo (15 pieces), we get a total profit of about 88,500 gold over 68 hunts, about 1,300 gold per hunt and 0.15 Yellow Seeds per hunt.

Comparing this to the results we have from the Crunchy Cycle in Derr we can see that using Gouda would earn about 1,375 gold per hunt and about 0.11 Red Seeds per hunt.

Either of these methods for crafting results in less gold per hunt than in Derr Dunes, but both of them result in more seeds, which may be useful for earning gold later in the Jungle of Dread.

Using Magic Essence for Gumbo

There are two ways to craft Gumbo, one produces 15 pieces, and the other requires 5 Magic Essence to craft 20 pieces, so which is better for earning gold?

Again this is something that relies on the price of Super Brie, and there are several ways to consider this.

If we look at gold returns per cheese, you can see that it’s worth buying Super Brie at any price lower than the return you make from Gumbo, as you will still make a profit.

If we look at gold returns per hunt, then the 15 piece recipe earns more per hunt if the price of Super Brie is over about 850 gold per piece.

Thank you to all who have contributed so far and will do so in the future.

  1. nice~ so is it worth if i only have giant speaker and not to craft HVMT??

  2. Is there any reason why the conqueror is so hard to attract (~4%) while its counterparts in the other two tribes are much easier?

    also, I assume you meant to say the Conqueror drops veggies, not stones…which would add an interesting twist to the isles

  3. Paul Humphreys says:

    @aie
    From what we’re seeing here the answer to that would be no, the Giant Speaker is slightly better than the HVMT in all fronts, in truth, if you were to have both traps, you probably wouldn’t notice much of a difference.

    @Peter
    No idea, I noticed it when I first went into the Tribal Isles, the Devs must have done it for some reason, just another factor that contributes to making Nerg slightly easier for hunters.

    Yes, I did mean veggies, I failed at correcting the copy and paste stuff, should be fixed now, along with the recommendation of a physical trap for the Nerg Chieftain!

  4. ok thanx paul…im thinking the same way as that…and 1 request from me. can u do the same for the JOD??? i appreciate if u culd man~ thee~

    for peter…maybe the conqueror have very hard difficulties rather than any mice in tribal isle(except for chieftain and his followers) which could increase more % of our level. It is also the same for JOD problem…

  5. @aie
    The plan is to do Elub next, then JoD, then Dracano (which is going to be such a dull article), so it is on its way.

  6. Grouping result into a table like this is much better to examine. I think you should keep point and gold per cheese in the table. And it is very useful if the table have sort function :D

    Thanks a lot for a great article. But I wonder why no Tribal Base is compared??? If this has result of using Tribal Base, we can compare the effect between power and luck. Anyway, this is very valuable. Thanks again :)

  7. Why is there 2 entries for Blast off and Candycane base with both YES on shield, may be the other one is meant for no shield? Just noticed it.

  8. Paul Humphreys says:

    @hiepsimo
    Unfortunately I’ve had to take the per Cheese values out because I was worried about the table being too compacted to look good.
    I’ll ask Rohan about coding to a sort function on the table, not sure how to do it myself.
    The Tribal base hasn’t been compared yet as we haven’t received a sufficient number of hunts with it, once we have it’ll be included.

  9. Paul Humphreys says:

    @Joey Hero
    Thanks, I’ve fixed it now.

  10. Paul, is it possible if u could make a comparison between bristle woods regions and the isles? cuz both are very good in gold and points..

  11. @bob
    It’s on my list to do. :)

  12. awesome man :) you guys are the best.

  13. Typo error:
    Gouda, the results above show that it will take about 53 hunts to collect 30 Savoury Vegetables, and we can expect to earn about 62,0000 gold after taking off the cost of Gouda at 600 gold per piece.

    should be 62,000 gold right?

    Reply from Paul Humphreys:
    Ooops, thanks for picking that up, it’s fixed now.

  14. hi, im wondering how ambush do in nerg when paired with various bases such as magma and tribal, any idea?

  15. so, if I need a lot of cash to buy my Hydro trap to move on to the Elub, should I just stay in Nerg after I have gotten the stuff I need? I was going to switch over to Derr with CC/CC, but it sounds like I should just stay in Nerg

  16. Has there been enough statistics to show the result of using 2010/CC with SB+?
    I am thinking on using this setup to maximise my point return while maintaing a healthy profit.

  17. I did not get the 2010 Blastoff Trap (and I’m kind of sorry for that now) but that was because I did not, even for a moment, think that it would be better then the Horrific Venus Mouse Trap. When I was doing my own research when I started hunting on the Island, Magma was the better base with the Kraken Chaos and the Chillbot, but the Tribal base had better results with the Horrific Venus Mouse Trap. I will hunt with it and Gouda in 4 to 5 days and I will provide you with the results. I hope that this will help.
    And one more thing, there was a very good article about luck (and I think that it is still here) but now that the luck effects have been changed a bit, I would really like to see some new research on luck effects and this is why:

    Your Trap: 2010 Blastoff Trap
    Your Base: Magma Base
    Total Power of your trap: 3567
    Total Luck of your trap: 42

    Your Trap: Horrific Venus Mouse Trap
    Your Base: Tribal Base
    Total Power of your trap: 4648
    Total Luck of your trap: 23

    There is 1081 more power for the HVMT/Tribal setup but 19 less luck. I would really like to see a Power to Luck comparison research.
    Happy Hunting to all and thank you furoma.com ;)

  18. Wow statistically, Snow Barrage has the best results! I’m surprised… this definitely shows off the prowess of high luck traps!

  19. Just wanted to add some data to HMVT/CCB/LS/Gouda. Seems CCB works fairly well compared to the Magma.

    Inputs
    Log size = 694 (57.83 pages of logs)
    Cheese cost (pp) = 0

    Key Stats
    Number of hunts = 667
    -> hourly check = 227; horn = 440 (own= 338, friends=102 )

    Number of catches = 434
    -> Catch rate per attraction = 83.14% ±3.31% C.I.
    Net points earned = 1727549
    -> per hunt = 2590.03
    -> per cheese = 3025.48
    Net profit = 1019170
    -> per hunt = 1527.99
