Ronza’s Oct 2009 offerings: An analysis
Ronza’s here (and shall be for atleast 10 days more)! So we at MHA (that’s Rohan, Sean and Paul) decided to evaluate Ronza’s traps and give you a thorough analysis of what to buy and what not to buy.
Contents:
These two weapons are very similar, the only difference in stats is the Cheese Effect, so for the purposes of this we’ll treat them as the same weapon, but if you want more stale cheese use the HitGrab Rockin’ Horse, if you want less, use the HitGrab Rainbow Rockin’ Horse.
This is the weakest of the weapons available from Ronza this time around and is available to hunters from Novice level and above, if you’ve been playing even semi-regularly for a few days you’ll have the points required to get this weapon.
Originally it was thought that this trap would be rather useless. High luck, but very low power. A souped-up Swiss Army Mousetrap, in a sense. However, application of this trap has shown a far different set of results.
A hunter with this trap can effectively hunt all of the way through the Burroughs and Whisker Woods, along with using the Hitgrab Rockin’ Horse to combat the mice in the Derr Dunes. The HGRH has a catch rate that is similar to the Digby Drillbot. It’s slightly lower, but the lower catch rate is offset by a MUCH larger rate of loot drop. It’s nothing when put up against the Rhinobot or one of the more powerful Ronza traps, but as a start-up trap for Derr, you can do much worse!
Verdict: A powerful physical trap that will serve you all the way up to and into Derr, especially for collecting stones. Made obsolete by the Rhinobot and other more powerful Ronza traps.
The Magma Base is the most powerful base seen so far, unless you take the Tribal Base with a high power setup. While the Explosive Base has the same power, an additional 3% power bonus makes the Magma Base win. What makes the base special, though, is not just the power – its also the highest luck base ever introduced in the game. 10 luck is 2 more than its nearest competitor, the Aqua Base.
Lets talk about the power first. The Magma Base is always better than the Explosive Base. But that’s not so with the Tribal Base – if the trap you use has a power greater than the Swiss Army Trap, the total power will be greater with the Tribal Base. However, the Magma base does have its advantages. see the next paragraph.
Luck – that’s the redeeming part of the Magma Base. Despite its lower power when compared with the Tribal Base, the Ancient Spear Gun/Magma Base has a 1% higher catch rate in the Elub Shore than Ancient Spear Gun/Tribal Base. Add in the increased loot drops with 10 extra luck, the 175 extra points and 200 extra gold per hunt, and the Magma Base wins comfortably.
The Magma Base is not as expensive as the Tribal base – 374,700 gold as compared to 499,600 for the Tribal base(that’s 124,900 gold less). For those who have the gold, the Base is definitely a good addition to your collection. Plus, its Limited Edition – what more could you want ;)
The only con I see in the Magma Base is the insanely stale cheese effect. It means your Gouda gets 11 more stales per 100 hunts. That’s 6600 gold per 100 hunts. The advantages however, more than balance that out.
My final verdict is: Buy it if you have the gold. Its worth it, and you should be able to use it in a lot of places for a very long time, in all the locations we have seen so far. Luck always helps!
The Kraken Chaos weapon is Ronza’s only Hydro weapon to date, it’s also the weapon with the least luck that she’s ever brought us.
The major advantage of this weapon is that you can get it before you catch the Hydra mouse with the ship blueprints, and being a Hydro trap it’s significantly better than anything else available to you to get that most elusive loot.
Once you get to S.S.Huntington II the Kraken Chaos will outperform the Net Cannon and Harpoon Gun, and will be your best choice of weapon there.
Once you get to the Tribal Isles and Elub Shore you’ll be looking to collect Seashells, the advantage of the Kraken Chaos here is that you instantly have something that’s comparable with the Ancient Spear Gun, so you don’t have to wait until you’ve caught an elder before you can put those Seashells to good use.
As far as collecting Seashells goes, the Kraken Chaos is comparable to the Ancient Spear Gun, the Ancient Spear Gun has only a slightly better catch rate, and the Kraken Chaos has a higher chance of loot dropping, in fact that’s the only advantage it does have over the Ancient Spear Gun, with a lower power and attraction, and a worse Cheese Effect.
Against the three boss mice in Elub, it’s catch rate is slightly lower than the Ancient Spear Gun, but not by any amount you’re likely to notice (maybe 1 in 75), and the extra luck may just bring in a few extra Blue Seeds from the Protectors.
All in all, this trap is definitely worth getting if you don’t have a Hydro weapon, and it may prove to outperform the Ancient Spear Gun in the long run, but with the price tag being slightly higher than the cost of the fully assembled Ancient Spear Gun, it’s not worth picking up if you already have a Hydro weapon.
The Giant Speaker can be best summed up as the Partybot of tactical traps.
(Assume you’re using the magma base for the numbers I’m giving)
First, it is very clear that the speaker is better than both the Mutated Venus Mouse Trap and Zugzwang’s Last Move. With its low point requirement (only 91,000 points), it is an ideal trap for masters who need a strong tactical trap for the Great Gnarled Tree. Of course, the gold cost is rather prohibitive, which means that it is of most benefit to those who donate and sell the SB+ that they receive when they donate.
The real question is, just how much does that 22 luck help the giant speaker for hunters who are grandmaster/legendary (and as such are likely to have the necessary gold)? As was true with the partybot, high luck makes a large difference in what the trap can do.
First, up against the Ambush in Furoma, the speaker flattens the ambush. The catch rate is better against every tactical mouse in the dojo, meditation room and pinnacle chamber. It also has higher attraction, which only helps matters. That means that if you own the speakers, you don’t need to construct the ambush- a great sign for hunters who are not legendary yet and therefore can’t craft the ambush yet.
The real test comes in the Nerg Plains, where hunters need the Thorned or Horrific Venus Mouse Trap, and the results are rather surprising. After MANY submitted logs, we’ve discovered that the numbers provided by the Catch Rate Estimates tool are VERY low. In reality, the logs show that the average profit, per hunt, using Speaker, Magma, and Gouda is over 1000 gold per hunt! That’s more than a lot of traps earn in Derr!
I personally want to apologize to everyone for initially saying that the HVMT is better than the Speaker, because it’s not better in any way. Against the big three (Defender, Slayer and Nerg Chieftain), the two are about dead-even, but when you go back to gouda cheese, the choice is clear- go with the Speaker every time.
Well, that’s it for today. You can use the Catch Rates Estimates to compare setups with the new traps or use the Ronza edition of the Travel Planner to save gold to buy the traps!

Well written!

I think u are talking abt the Aqua base here since Polar has only 4..
Apart from that Great Conclusions… Very Similar to what i deduced too..
“10 luck is 2 more than its nearest competitor, the Polar Base. You’ll need”
Double oops! That last sentence is unfinished, and you meant Aqua Base, not Polar.
Can you make mention of how best to harvest Rockforth Cheese and how best to implement Rockforth Cheese? Thanks.
Charles – Rockforth is best harvested with SB+ at Ronza’s, and implemented at ToG or ToD.
Hi :)
And thanks for a great update.
Just found myself deciding that i wont by the tribal base, when i got the magma, even though im not even close to the points that tribal needs. (got about 10 mil.) Well, one question, check.
Then, to the real thing. im a hero (29%) and i have ambush and hvmt. bought the speaker. limited edition, what is a girl to do? ;) aaaaand, the speaker+magma+shield has given me waaaaay more in nerg plains than hvmt+aqua+shield. With 20 gumbo i got 2 red boxes and 18 mice and 29 seeds, with hvmt+gumbo about 3-4 mice and 2-3 seeds… Well, over and out :)
A nice, well balanced analysis.
When looking at Ronza’s new offerings, the Krakens’ luck jumped out at me as potentially being useful for shell gatherering in Elub, something I’m keen to try out. Your primary analysis of its performance looks particularly encouraging.
I was also glad to see you compare the Speaker to the PB, as that is the similarity that struck me most. One aspect that I haven’t seen covered anywhere, perhaps surprisingly, is the value of the traps for tournament users. It struck me that players, who compete in Tournaments but do not have the PB, will find the Speaker is an excellent tool for building multipliers up in lower level areas. Despite not being as powerful as the PB in general, it is perfectly adapted to such a role, plus it has the advantage of having an added boost against the tactical mice that appear in such areas.
I can’t speak for Rohan and Paul, but I know that I’m not a big tournament participant, which makes it (unfortunately) difficult to speak on tournament strategies.
This is of course why my guide still has no tournament section.
Charles & Rohan – I would further suggest using the magma base with the rockin horse trap, which gives me a 42 luck with the shield.
Thanks for the update! But, I have a question.
I’m hero (60%), i don’t have any Hydro trap right now. I bought Ship BP and finished with Derr and Nerg. Should I buy Kraken Chaos? or I just hunt at Elub with Harpoon Gun? Thanks…
Great article!
It sums up nicely enough why both the Speakers and Kraken are worth getting, but I remain in somewhat of a dilemma as I only have enough gold for one. Already possessing a ZLM and no VMT, I am halfway in my quest for an Ambush at the Dojo. Was thinking of giving up the speakers and stick with making the ambush since its cheaper, and buying the kraken for future use even though it’ll be months before I use it. Any advice would be most appreciated!
Brilliant work!
I also took into account with Magma base the large difference in points needed to get to Tribal base, Magma is well worth it, even if that means missing a trap upgrade to get this base.
great stuff here!!
Hey Sean.
Awesome work there mate, have been using your tools for a while, and found them insanely useful for getting the most gold and points out of my time :)
I just wanted to add something to your analysis of the Giant Speaker trap. As well as saving 250000 on not having to buy the HVFT, thus equating to 6000 hunts in Nerg, I also think that you may be able to save buying the Sinister portal trap from Digby, and use the pure power of the speakers (turned up to 11 ofc,) to neutralise the mobs in the Mausoleum. This may have a few drawbacks, such as a lower Lycan catch rate, but as far as the pure gold/points ratio goes, I think it could be yet another good reason to buy the speakers if you can afford ‘em.
Keep up the top work!
Martin,
Thanks for your comment – just wanted to point out, Sean doesn’t develop the tools :P
Thanks for the analysis! I wish i’d read this before buying the hitgrab rockin’ horsey (since i already have the swiss army mouse trap). now i’m borrowing from friends and putting as many hours as i can spare just for enough to get the magma base (this wouldn’t be too much of a leap if i hadn’t made the first purchase). hopefully i make it by the end of the week so i won’t feel bad about getting the horsey!
Thanks for the Article!.
However, I now have a question. I’m a Legendary (95%), I have the ambush, the DD, the ACRONYM, and the magma, but I don’t have the ship blueprints or the VMT.
My question is: Should I keep saving up for the Kraken, or get the Speakers first? I don’t think I’ll be able to purchase both even if I sell off all my SB+ and traps. I’m still leaning toward the Kraken, but which one will make the most long-term sense?
Are you going to incorporate this information with the crash course and guide? I mean in the pages we look at for info on what to use, not just here? That would be awesome.
Also this color scheme is incredibly hard on the eyes, and can’t even make out the symbols here in the Reply area.
To reiterate a comment from when this was posted on the forums:
Both Rockin’ Horseys have 25 luck, which is equivalent to the PartyBot and beaten only by the Snow Barrage and ChromeBot. The Devs mentioned that there may be a “luck only” mouse in the future (like Acolyte used to be), which would mean the Horsey would be your best bet *if you don’t have PartyBot/Snob/ChromeBot*. Since luck is squared according to the MH Analytics formula, it’d probably still be worth getting even if your next highest luck trap has 22 (Giant Speaker).
Great guide:-) Thanks for writing all this! I love your stuff.
@Robin
Maybe it’s just you, because I can make them out perfectly well. I like this colour scheme, as well as the layout. :-) Good job once again!
hey thanks for the article, it’s real neat :D
just wanna ask though, if i were a knight, and i wanted to get either the kraken or the speaker just for trap collection, which one should i get? i was thinking kraken cos of elub and stuff but maybe you could confirm it for me? thanks dude.
can anybody tell me that till what time will the rockstars be available?
would it be good to collect cheese till ronza depart and then hunt for it?
Hi here’s for your research and for those who wanna know if Hitgrab horsey with magma base is useful at Ronza and sample cheese research. Cheers

Erm, any opinion of how to catch burglar mouse? I just simply can’t catch a single one yet!
Using SB+ in Ronza’s shoppe is a good bet for a Burglar right now, plus it should bring in plenty of Rockforth and that can make it worth the current cost of SB+.
If I already have the Ambush, and I don’t have any version of the Venus Mouse Trap, is it worth getting the Speakers? I’m 1% shy of Hero and about to hit the Tribal Isles once I catch a Shelder.
I’m a legendary with ship blueprints and enough gold for the kraken, but I’m wondering if it’s really worth getting or is the ancient spear gun still the better choice?
Info on the speaker trap is part bogus; You can craft Ambush as a Grandmaster, as I’ve somehow managed… I’ve already been through the whole dojo path and have my onyx stone at the ready!
You gave us a price for all except the Kraken. I don’t want to spend my gold to travel there just yet (in the Cats right now hunting BIG TIME for some gold HA). Can you give me that price. I’m thinking somewhere in the 860K?
@Red
If you have the Ambush then you have a trap that will get you through the Tribal Isles, the HVMT is slightly better in Nerg than the Speakers, but if you’re looking at saving gold, then it’s worth gettting them.
@Kathleen
Kraken will do better in the ship than anything you can buy in that location, it may also do better than the Ancient Spear Gun at collecting Seashells, which could save you time in the future and make up for it’s slightly worse catch rate against the three Nerg boss mice. Personally I’d say it’s worth gettting.
@Allan
You can craft the Ambush at GM, but there’s a risk involved which means you might lose it.
@Mojo
Sorry, I missed that out, but you’re spot on with the price.
Hi, I own the Ancient Spear Gun and I’m wondering if I should buy the Kraken or save up for the Rhino. I do have enough gold for the Kraken but buying it will bankrupt me. XD
Thanks!
yea the combined price is ard 2 mil, but I recall there were people that advised to not to save when ronza had not arrived, :P
Who may that person be?
does that means that i can use giant speaker for furoma without making ambush?
Yes
Yes, giant speaker is better than ambush. Horrific venus mousetrap is slightly better than giant speaker though.
Dear Author furoma.com !
I congratulate, your opinion is useful
Is there gonna be a new one like this for the new Ronza items? Would help alot of people out with your nicely written conclusions… :)
I want to quote your post in my blog. It can?
And you et an account on Twitter?
I’m still surprised why there are still some people saying that HVMT is better than GS. Post # 35 by Allen. I mean, I’ve read that thousands hunts have proven this. I’ve supplied nearly one thousand hunts using Gouda myself.
GS never misses against the weaker 5 mice at Nerg. My catch rate per attraction has been averaging on the low 90s. At some point, 100+ Gouda, and I got nearly 98% catch rate.
Yeah, Rohan, apology accepted. LOL
I was a master when Ronza came that October. Hadn’t bought VMT, though I had planned to buy it. GS got me a Magma, yep, I bought GS 1st, since my calculations showed that I’d have better chance buying both Magma and GS if I bought GS 1st.
All in all, I’m probably one of those very lucky hunters, have been patient enough to wait for a better physical trap. Haven’t bought FF nor DDB, got that CCT, and finally that Chrome thingy Sean called ChillBot. ^_^
*back earning gold for my CoT*
so sad i din get the giant speakers… now have to go for the HVMT
